Aug. 09--Fire destroyed a building at BP Amoco in Cainhoy Saturday afternoon, causing an estimated $25 million damage.
Firefighters got a call at 1:54 p.m. that a building at 1306 Amoco Drive was on fire, according to Steve Goodwin, deputy fire chief of Cainhoy Rural Fire & Rescue. Crews arrived at 2:03 p.m. to find fire and heavy smoke coming from the three-story building. The BP fire brigade was already on the scene and advised crews that the fire could endanger nearby buildings that contained hazardous materials, Goodwin said.
Charleston and North Charleston fire departments also fought the blaze.
Crews were unable to enter the building because of the flames. The fire was put out in about 45 minutes, although crews remained for several hours to douse hot spots, Goodwin said.
Crews were able to keep the fire from spreading. Berkeley County EMS was on the scene, although no injuries were reported.
The building was declared a total loss. BP officials said it was a compressor building and estimated the damage at $25 million, Goodwin said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
