Intruder Dons EMS Uniform, Arrested in W.Va. Firehouse

Sept. 15, 2014
The homeless woman said she was cold.

A West Virginia EMS crew didn't respond to an emergency Friday night due to unusual circumstances.

The Putnam County EMS crew -- station in the Poca Community firehouse -- found a woman dressed in one of their uniforms as they were about to answer a call. They quickly got another crew to handle the incident, while they detained her.

"What you do in a situation like that? You walk out and there's somebody with your clothes on, going through your partner's stuff," Franklin Bragg, a Putnam County EMT, told a WCHS  reporter.

She originally told the on-duty medics she was with another county EMS agency. But they didn't buy it and restrained her until a trooper arrived.

It turns out she was homeless and cold. Police determined she went through the medics' lockers, stole bedding, toiletries, and anything she could get her hands on.

Nichole Braham was charged with numerous offenses in connection with the incident including theft and trespassing.

In a statement on their Facebook page, Paco firefighters said: "The members of the fire department are all understandably upset. We are a brother/sister hood. The station is our home. Someone broke into our home. Fortunately, there was little damage and no one was injured. We are, however, taking steps to ensure that we don't have problems like this again. We would like to thank the public for their concern."
