Shreveport's fire chief and the assistant chief were fired Thursday for their failure to handle complaints about firefighters accused of mistreating a challenged man in a firehouse.

Chief Ronald C. Mulford has been on paid leave since June, charged with five counts of malfeasance in office, The Shreveport Times reported.

Assistant Chief James Carpenter, who also was on leave after being indicted for perjury, also is accused of violating internal policies.

While the chief was fired by the mayor, the paper noted that Carpenter was dismissed by Deputy Chief Ronald Jones, currently the highest ranking officer.

Also on Thursday,  former Shreveport firefighter Billy Glass pleaded guilty to hiring a prostitute and acting cruelly toward an intellectually disabled man, the paper reported.

The incident that led to the officers' demise involved firefighters hiring a prostitute to have an encounter with a challenged man. Several firefighters were charged.
