Sailboat Burns in Ore. Marina

Oct. 13, 2014
Nobody was hurt as the 27-foot sailboat burned in Portland.

Firefighters kept a burning sailboat from spreading to others vessels at a Portland marina Monday morning.

Crews were called to Fred's Marina on 12800 NW Marina Way just before 8 a.m. and found a 27-foot sailboat burning.

The Portland fire boat joined land-based crews who were using portable floating fire pumps to extinguish the fire.

"These fires are dangerous because firefighters are at risk of falling into the water," the department said in a statement. "Firefighters wear life preservers to lessen this risk. These fires are challenging because firefighters often have to use alternative water supplies due to the distance from the boats to land."

A fire investigator was called to determine the cause of the fire.
