Two Jersey City firefighters suffered burns and another was injured after falling through a hole.

Three Jersey City firefighters were injured Tuesday morning as fire damaged two buildings.

The fire was reported just before 2 a.m. at 188 Kensington Avenue, a vacant three-story building.

Jersey City Public Safety Department Spokeswoman Carly Baldwin told the Jersey City Journal that two firefighters were transferred from Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health, to St. Barnabas Medical Center, for burn injuries.

The third firefighter was treated for back injuries after falling through a hole.

Baldwin said crews encountered "heavy, heavy" fire when they arrived.

It is believed that squatters were in the home when they fire broke out, and it quickly spread to the adjacent building.

Tom Karczewski, who lives next door, was asleep when he heard someone outside yelling "Fire! Fire!"

Firefighters worked for 90 minutes to contain the fire.

"The firemen did a great job," Karczewski said. "It would have been much worse if not for them."
