An Illinois community needs a fire chief and several firefighters.

Washington Park Chief Mark Norris resigned Wednesday, and seven of the department's 10 volunteers walked out with him, according to KMOV.

“I feel for the community. We love what we do, but we also have to think about ourselves as well. We’re not getting treated the way we should be treated,” one firefighter told a reporter.

The Village of Washington Park stopped paying their firefighters in order to save money. After one year of volunteering, they were told to re-apply for their jobs, the station reported.

Firefighters said the trucks kept breaking down, and new equipment is needed.
