The woman was severely burned.

A 25-year-old woman was severely burned in an apartment fire on Lady's Island early Tuesday morning, according to the Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire District.

Smoke and light flames were visible when firefighters arrived at the Sams Point Road apartment complex after 3 a.m., fire district spokesman Scott Harris said.

"The young man living above the apartment on fire heard noises from downstairs and immediately went down to help," Harris said.

After failing to open the locked door, the man busted a bedroom window, and with the help of another neighbor pulled the woman to safety, Harris said.

The woman suffered severe burns to most of her body and was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital and later flown to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga., Harris said.

The apartment was filled with heavy smoke as firefighters made their way to the fire in the woman's bedroom, Harris said. The fire was quickly extinguished and fans set up to clear the smoke for investigation.

About half the house suffered severe heat and smoke damage, Harris said.

Harris said the fire is believed to have been accidentally started, but an official cause has not been determined.
