LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two small earthquakes have struck north of Los Angeles, shaking parts of Ventura and Los Angeles counties, but officials say there have been no reports of injury or serious damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-4.2 quake hit Saturday night and was centered close to 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Los Angeles near the town of Castaic. The USGS initially put the magnitude at 4.5.

The larger quake was widely felt but both fire and sheriff's officials say there have been no reports of any injuries or serious damage from the temblor.

There were more than 1,500 postings on the USGS website from respondents saying they felt the quake.

About 20 minutes earlier, the USGS says a magnitude-3.0 quake hit near the same place.
