The mother and a five-year-old managed to escape the fire, according to WDB7.

Galax Fire Chief David Hankley and a police officer were treated for smoke inhalation after trying to rescue the children, who were trapped inside.

“They made several attempts to get inside the house but was driven back by the fire and smoke,” Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner said during a press conference. “It’s horrible, horrible. We have a lot of house fires but we don’t have a lot of house fires where people die especially not children. It’s just tragic.”
