The fire started in the engine compartment.

A group of boaters was rescued Sunday after their yacht caught fire between Tiburon and Angel Island.

The incident occurred in the afternoon on a 43-foot motor yacht in Raccoon Strait, said Tiburon fire Battalion Chief Mike Ayers. He said the fire started in the engine compartment.

A nearby mariner took the occupants off the burning yacht before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported.

Ayers said fire boat crews spent about two hours extinguishing the flames while keeping the yacht away from the shore and other bay traffic. He said the damage to the boat could exceed $200,000, if it is salvagable at all.

The boat was tied up in Richardson Bay after the fire was extinguished. The emergency response included boat crews from the Tiburon, Southern Marin and Richmond fire departments, as well at the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, the San Francisco Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard.
