An Athens County volunteer firefighter died this morning at the fire station from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the head, Sheriff Rodney Smith said.
Christopher D. Downs, 47, of Glouster, was pronounced dead at the Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Department, Smith said.
Downs also taught fourth grade at Trimble Elementary School in the Trimble school district, according to the district website.
The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate. No foul play is suspected, Smith said.
