An electrical short is blamed.

CHEVY CHASE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A mother and her daughter were electrocuted Saturday on a stairwell outside a Chevy Chase home.

According to Montgomery County authorities, an occupant at a home on the 8800 block of Connecticut Avenue came home to find a 29-year-old woman and her 4-year-old daughter unconscious on a stairwell leading to the basement.

First responders were called to the scene at approximately 4:30 p.m. and began performing CPR on the two victims before they were transported to separate hospitals, where they succumbed to their injuries.

Investigators found a sump pump in the standing water near the victims. It is possible the pump created an electrical surge that killed the victims.

The incident remains under investigation, but police do not believe foul play was involved.
