Child Dies in Crash with Va. Ambulance

A vehicle crossed a median and crashed into the Glade Spring ambulance.

An ambulance collided with an oncoming vehicle that crossed a median near Glade Spring, leaving one child dead.

The Glade Spring Volunteer Fire Department rig was southbound on Interstate 81 around 1 p.m. when the northbound Toyota crossed the median and collided with the ambulance. 

It is believed that the car hydroplaned, Virginia State Police Sgt. Daniel Price told the Herald Courier.

The adult female driver and 16-year-old front-seat passenger were flown to separate hospitals. 

Two children in the back seat were taken to a nearby hospital. 

A third child was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The vehicle extrication was an extensive operation and lasted more than 90 minutes to remove all of the occupants,” Glade Spring Fire Lt. Ricky Stumbo told the newspaper.

The ambulance had a crew of two and one was was transported with non-life threatening injuries.
