Denver firefighters are mourning the loss of a firefighter who weeks after he fell at a fire scene.
John Whelan, a 15-year member of the department, responded to a dumpster fire on June 29.
He was on the roof monitoring a dumpster fire when the skylight gave way, and he fell 20 feet, TheDenverChannel.com reported.
"Situations like this are a constant reminder that the work done by our firefighters is dangerous and they put their life and safety on the line regularly to protect our community," Denver Fire Chief, Eric Tade told the television station after Whelan fell.
He was rushed to St. Anthony North Health Campus for shortness of breath.
Whelan was still in the hospital for treatment for broken ribs, internal injuries and a broken arm.
Officials said he suffered cardiac arrest Wednesday night at the hospital and was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m.
“I am overwhelmed with sadness by the death of one our own, firefighter John Whelan. He gave his life in the line of duty to ensure the safety of others," Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock said in a statement. "My family and I join all of Denver in expressing our profound sorrow for this loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and with the men and women of Denver Fire mourning the loss of their fallen brother. It is with a heavy heart and sincere gratitude that we are reminded of the sacrifices firefighters and their families make each and every day to keep our city safe.”
