Locke Township Lt. Chris Phillips died after responding to an emergency.

A North Carolina firefighter answered his final alarm Wednesday.

Locke Township Lt. Chris Phillips, 42, died just hours after responding to a fatal crash near Mt. Ulla.

He was scheduled to start a full-time position with the department.

“He was a top notch individual. Lt Phillips lived life to the fullest.  He made the most out of every day. If you were having a bad day and you came across him, he would put a smile on your face before you  left,” Chief Rusty Alexander told reporters.

He is survived by his wife and four-year-old daughter.
