A fire watch has been established as the probe continues.

New Orleans firefighters are on fire watch at the scene of a six-alarm blaze near the French Quarter Wednesday morning.

Fire crews were called to Canal Street near Roosevelt Way at 3:23 a.m.

They found a four-story commercial building on fire three minutes later. Within two minutes, three alarms were struck.

"A fourth alarm was called for at 3:39 a.m. as the fire began to intensify, and personnel realized the high probability of the structure’s collapse," Capt. Edwin Holmes said.

Several aerial master streams are being used with hoselines to knock down the fire, which has engulfed all floors of the building.

Within an hour, the fire reached six alarms bringing more than 90 firefighters with 30 units.

Authorities are questioning a person who was in the second-floor apartment when the fire started.

Firefighters said they contained the blaze, and stopped it from spreading to nearby buildings.

One firefighter suffered minor burns.
