Crews from three states worked to stop a blaze before is destroyed a 239-year-old home in Northfield.

Firefighters found a large barn on Millers Falls Road fully involved.

“We didn’t put a drop of water on the barn — that was already gone once it got going,” Fire Chief Floyd “Skip” Dunnell III told The Recorder. “We concentrated our efforts on saving the main house.”

The fire spread to several 100-pound propane tanks and spread to a garage that separated the home and barn.

“It was a tough go, but we were able to save it,” said Fire Chief Floyd “Skip” Dunnell III. “Thank God we were successful.”

Firefighters from than a dozen departments in Massachussets, New Hampshire and Vermont responded to battle or shuttle water to the fire.

The main house received smoke and water damage, but Dunnell said crews kept it from causing extensive damage.

Officials believe the cause of the fire is electrical.
