The cab of the truck was fully engulfed inside the Tip O'Neill tunnel.

Boston firefighters spent several hours Thursday extinguishing a fire that engufled the cab of a garbage truck inside the Tip O'Neil Tunnel.

Fire crews were called to the one-and-a-half-mile long tunnel around 1:20 p.m.

The cab of the truck was fully involved and spread to the compactor area, according to Boston fire officials.

Boston Engine 21 supplied a standpipe system to feed water to crews as the battled the fire in the tunnel, photos on the department's account showed.

Once the fire was knocked down, a heavy duty tow truck brought the hauler out of the tunnel.

Firefighters cut the top of the truck open and began pouring water inside while a mini-excavtor pulled burning debris from the truck. Four hours after they were called out, the fire was still smoldering.

No injuries were reported, officials said.
