Mayday Called at Deadly CO High-Rise Fire

Two firefighters became disoriented and crews were unable to use the standpipes in the Aurora building.

Unattended cooking is blamed for deadly fire in an Aurora high-rise Saturday. A mayday was called by disoriented firefighters and standpipes failed to supply water to fire suppression crews.

Aurora Fire Rescue was called to Heather Gardens on East Linvale Place around 7:30 p.m.

The standpipe failed to provide water to crews on the sixth floor, so crews were forced to haul attack lines up six stories, Lt. Laure Bridges told The Denver Post.

According to radio traffic captured by 5280Fire.com, two firefighters became disoriented on the sixth floor and called a mayday. They were located and safely removed.

A crew radioed that they found a victim on the sixth floor and crews carried the person to the first floor to an awaiting EMS crew.

Three alarms were called, bringing more than a dozen fire companies to the scene.

One person was transported to the hospital where they later died, Bridges said. That person was in the fire apartment. Another person suffered moderate injuries.

The fire was placed under control at 9:30.
