WV Fire Station, Rigs Destroyed by Flames

July 26, 2016
Great Cacapon lost its building, a tanker, a brush truck and all their gear.

The WV fire marshal is investigating the cause of a blaze that destroyed the Great Cacapon fire station Tuesday.

Heavy fire and smoke were discovered just before noon at the station on Spring Street.

Fire Chief Matt Grimely told Herald-Mail reporters: "I was able to save two apparatus. We lost a tanker and a brush truck ... We lost all of our turnout gear. I'm the only one who has a set of gear left."

lWitnesses said the chief drove one of the rigs through the closed bay door.

Firefighters from neighboring departments as well as some from Maryland and Pennsylvania assisted with the fire fight.

There were no injuries.

The department has been serving the community for the past 70 years, and has about 25 active members. And, the chief says they will continue to respond with equipment offered by neighbors.

“We’re not going anywhere, our service is going to be uninterrupted. If they have an emergency, we’ll be there,” Grimley told reporters.

Two of the tankers were in the shop being repaired.

The volunteers say they know the future will be tough as they try to get funds to rebuild.
