Seven members of an Amish family were injured – at least three of them seriously – when their buggy was hit by a car Sunday morning in Elk Lick Township, responders said.
Crews arrived at the scene to find the buggy “torn apart” on Route 669 and quickly had to call for medical helicopters from three states to carry a 33-year-old man and two children to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, Salisbury fire Chief Dave Short Jr. said.
The Amish man and two children – a 10-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy – appeared to have sustained numerous serious injuries in the crash, Short said.
He said it’s likely several other family members received significant injuries, too. All seven members of the family, including five children, were thrown from the buggy when the collision occurred and ended up on a Springs Road driveway.
“The car and the buggy were both heading southbound when the accident occurred,” he said.
It was not immediately known what caused the crash.
State police in Somerset were handling the investigation but no details on the incident were available Sunday evening, a police communications operator said.
A female motorist behind of the wheel of the sedan that collided with the buggy escaped the crash without injury, Short said. Her vehicle was approximately 1/8 of a mile up the road when crews arrived, he said.
Somerset County 911 officials said Grantsville Fire Department, state police and several ambulance units were all dispatched to the scene to assist Salisbury Fire Department.
A state police helicopter from the Cumberland, Maryland, barracks, and medical helicopters from West Virginia and Somerset were called, Short said.
