Officials say that a volunteer firefighter stopped the teenage gunman who was shooting at the Townville Elementary School playground on Wednesday.
The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office identified the firefighter as Jamie Brock. He was unarmed.
He has volunteered with the Townville Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years, according to WSPA.com.
Brock heard the call for an active shooter over his pager and rushed to the scene.
That's when he saw the 14-year-old firing a handgun and tackled him to the ground, holding him down until law enforcement arrived.
"Mr. Brock is a big fellow," Sheriff John Skipper told WYFF4.com, adding that Brock likely prevented others from being shot.
Police officers arrived within seven minutes and took the shooter into custody.
A teacher and two students were injured in the shooting, according to WSPA. Jacob Hall, a kindergartner, is listed in serious condition.
“We appreciate the community’s support, especially the Townville Rescue Squad, who treated Jacob onsite and brought him to the hospital,” Jacob’s parents told WYFF4.
Jeffrey Osborne, the shooter's 47-year-old father, was later found to shot dead at his home a mile from the school.
Police believe
“We are heartbroken about this senseless act of violence,” Dr. Joanne Avery, Anderson County District 4 superintendent said.
