Michael Fahy passed the deputy chief's exam in 2013 and was waiting for the promotion when he was killed in Tuesday's explosion that injured more than a dozen in The Bronx.
The position is the highest civil service promotional achievement in the FDNY and the departmen announced the posthumous promotion of Fahy Thursday.
"Chief Fahy achieved the rank of chief officer faster than any active member of the department,” Commissioner Daniel Nigro said Thursday. “He was a rising star who accomplished so much during his 17 years with the FDNY, and is deserving of this promotion for his selfless dedication and service.”
Fahy, a 17-year veteran of the department spent his years as a battalion chief in The Bronx. As a captain, he worked in Lower Manhattan and as a firefighter and company officer he worked in Manhattan and The Bronx.
"His career was remarkable both for his selfless devotion to duty and his meteoric ascension in rank, which continues today with this deserved promotion to deputy chief in the FDNY," said Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Funeral services have been announced.
A wake is being held at Flower Funeral Home in Yonkers, NY, on Sept. 29 and 30.
The funeral will take place at Annunciatn Church in Yonkers, NY, at 11 a.m. on Oct. 1.
