Fire Apparatus Kills 37 Cows in Sweden

Oct. 10, 2016
The fire apparatus from Östra Skaraborg was responding to a crash when it struck the cows.

A responding fire apparatus crashed into dozens of cows that escaped from a pasture near Hjo.

The Räddningstjänsten Östra Skaraborg fire crew was called out to Road 195 just after 11 p.m. on Saturday when a car struck a single cow.

"It was dark and rainy, and the cows were dark," Eastern Skaraborg Emergency Services spokesperson Göran Sandström told Sveriges Television.

Officials said the cows were standing together when the fire truck approached the scene and struck them. Thirty seven cows died at the scene.

"It is all a pretty miserable event," West Bengal Police Duty Officer Eva Ekblad told the television station.

A firefighter sustained a broken leg.

The apparatus had extensive damage and was towed away from the scene.
