Oct. 10, 2016
Silver City firefighter Zach Collins was doing cleanup work with a contractor when he was struck by a tree.

A volunteer firefighter from Olive sustained serious injuries while cleaning up after Hurricane Matthew in Florida.

Zach Collins, a member of the Silver City Fire Department in Jennings, was part of a contract crew with CHLOETA that was clearing debris over the weekend when he was struck by a falling tree.

Collins was flown to a hospital in Florida, according to a post on the fire department's Facebook page.

He sustained a torn kidney, a torn lung and a broken arm.

"Please continue prayer for Zach and please remember his family it's very hard to get the phone call that your son has been in an accident and you miles and states away," the department said on Facebook.

His family was traveling to the hospital in Florida to be at his side.
