A Milwaukee firefighter cut part of his finger off with a saw as fire damaged two homes.

A firefighter was taken to the hospital after cutting part of their finger off Monday night.

The fire was reported around 10:15 p.m. at W. Concordia Avenue and N. 4th Street and damaged two dwellings.

The firefighter was using a saw on the roof of one of the homes when he cut part of his finger off, police told local television station WISN.

The firefighter was transported to the Froedtert Hospital and his condition is not known.

"I was in my kitchen cooking and I heard somebody say, 'fire' and I dropped all my utensils and I ran to help evacuate. The house was across the street and I knew there was kids in that house and I had to get them out," neighbor Ortmayer told television station WDJT.

"Callers were telling us people were trying to go back into the house which we absolutely don't recommend," Deputy Chief Aaron Lipski said. "We would always encourage go bang on the door, ring a door bell, make some noise - get the attention of the people to try to get them out."

The two-alarm fire displaced 15 residents from both structures.
