Social Media Comments Lead to Suspension for TX Captain

Nov. 11, 2016
Capt. Gregory Zenkner was suspended by the Austin FD for a series of Facebook posts.

A fire captain received a 30-day suspension from the Austin Fire Department for posts on social media.

Capt. Gregory Zenkner was suspended by the department because he made a series of posts that violate the city's social media policies, a memo obtained by local television station KXAN showed.

According to the memo, the posts were made between Sept. 9 and Oct. 16 and, according to the memo, were “posted inappropriate comments on his social media account.”

One of the posts read: “Hey Hillary, I’m not one of your minority, hands-out, entitled, easily-offended, whiney, unemployed, drain on society voters. I’m a hard working, tax paying, gun owning, mortgage paying, productive member of society. And I’m the deplorable one?”

The department's social media policy prohibits firefighters from using obscene language to ridicule, threaten, harass, or express bias against anyone.

Zenkner's suspension was effective Oct. 31.

The 19-year member of the department oversees fire recruit training, the television station reports.
