Jan. 18, 2017
Firefighter Leonardo Moreno, who entered a manhole to rescue several workers, is expected to be released in a few days.

The family of a Key Largo firefighter injured in Monday's deadly deadly manhole incident says his condition has improved.

Fire officials said Leonardo Moreno was in a coma after he was pulled unconscious from a manhole where three workers die.

“Even when he was sedated he was reacting, responding, waking up so we’re hopeful that everything is going to come out great,” his brother Yoel Moreno told CBSMiami.

Moreno is expected to be released from Jackson Hospital in a few days.

“I just saw him down there unconscious and I knew that he wasn’t going to stay down there," Rafael Calante said about his rescue effort.

Three contractors were died after they were overcome by noxious fumes.
