Cleveland Police Officer Fatally Struck at Apparatus Crash Scene

The police officer was struck at the scene of crash where a van slammed into a fire apparatus.

A man was arrested hours after he allegedly struck a police officer who was providing traffic control at two crash scenes.

Rocky River firefighters were working a single vehicle crash on Interstate 90 around 5:30 a.m. when a van slammed into the back of a fire apparatus, according to Cleveland19.com.

The 29-year-old driver of the van was pronounced dead on scene and a passenger was injured.

While placing flares at the scene, Cleveland police officer David Fahey was struck in a hit-skip incident, the television station reports.

Responders rushed Fahey to the hospital, but he was died a short time later. 

Police were looking for a white Toyota Camary and found the vehicle a few hours later.

U.S. Marshals joined police to arrest Israel Alvarez, 44, on suspicion of aggravated vehicular homicide and felony hit-skip.
