A Milford firefighter and FOX 2 News reporter died during training Saturday morning.

A Milford firefighter died during training Saturday morning.

Ron Savage, 63, suffered a cardiac issue just a day before he planned to take part in a stair climb at the Renaissance Center tower in Detroit.

Savage worked as an anchor and reporter for FOX 2 in Detroit, according to television station WJBK.

"He was congratulating everyone in his group for their successful completion and with no issue stated or anything, unfortunately he collapsed," Milford Fire Chief Thomas Moore told WJBK. "Immediately it was recognized that Ron had a medical issue and immediately everybody went into action to get the rest of his gear off to access the situation and to treat it as needed."

He suffered cardiac arrest, Moore said. The chief added that there was nothing Savage's fellow firefighters could do to revive him.

"I can't say enough about Ron, Ron was a great person to have around," Moore said. "He was a great person to talk to, he was a great resource."

He received awards during his journalism career and while volunteering as a firefighter/EMT in his community.

Savage received two citations for bravery from the Milford Fire Department, including one for the rescue of a critically injured truck driver.

At Fox 2, the Emmy award winning journalist co-anchored weekend news and produced a Crime Stoppers segment.
