Cove Creek/Pearson Volunteer Fire Departments are mourning the loss of their fire chief Sunday.

Doug Deckard, 51, was outside his vehicle checking on damage and water conditions when he was struck on Highway 25 near Quitman.

He died a short time later, according to KHTV.

"He was a wonderful member of our community, and his kindness, work ethic, and enthusiasm will be sorely missed," the Cleburne County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. "His willingness to serve our community should be a shining example to us all."

Deckard served the department for 40 years and was also the county's search and rescue team coordinator.

Arkansas State Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
