Two Dead in Small Plane Crash near NJ Airport

A plane crash near Teterboro Airport killed the two people on board, but there were no injuries on the ground.

May 15-- Two people were killed Monday when a small plane trying to land at Teterboro Airport crashed in a New Jersey town, causing a fiery wreck that also set multiple buildings on fire.

According to NBC, the pilot and co-pilot were both killed, but Carlstadt police said no one else was on board and there were no other injuries on the ground.

The FAA released a statement saying the Learjet 35 was approaching Runway 1 at Teterboro at around 3:30 p.m. when it went down in a busy industrial area of Carlstadt about 1/4 mile from the airport.

The crash set buildings, cars and power lines ablaze, Carlstadt police said. Thick, black smoke was seen rising high above the crash site, and was visible as far away as New York City, according to NBC.

"There's nothing really left of the plane at all - you just see the two engines that are burnt up and stuff," a witness told NBC.

Firefighters from multiple departments responded to several building and car fires, officials said. Members of the FAA and NTSB were also en route to the scene as part of an ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash.

Officials said Teterboro Airport has been closed and flight operations ceased until further notice.
