A detached garage that had been converted into a living space collapsed Monday with two residents inside.

Aug. 14--Dallas firefighters rescued a couple early Monday morning when the converted two-story garage they lived in collapsed during a windy storm.

NBC 5 reports that members of Dallas Fire-Rescue's Urban Search and Rescue crew responded when the section of the home in the 1400 block of Padgitt Avenue, just south of downtown Dallas, toppled over with both residents sleeping inside.

Firefighters who arrived on scene directed the couple to the most stable part of the structure, and both were able to get outside without serious injuries.

The man who was in the apartment, Frdrick Scott, said the structure had been leaning for a while but that he didn't expect it to actually collapse. The landlord who rented the residence to Scott also said he was aware of the issue but was waiting for the tenants to vacate before tearing it down.

"Oh, yeah, it's been like that for a while," said Scott, who added he was trying to save up money to buy a home and decided to take his chances. "And I've been telling the landlord that every time it rains it gets worse."

A Dallas Battalion Chief told NBC 5 that firefighters chose to level the structure to avoid any injuries with so many children living in the neighborhood.
