Campbellsburg firefighter Thomas McBride collapsed Thursday night while training and died at a hospital.

Aug. 25-- A Campbellsburg volunteer firefighter who spent 42 years in the fire service has died after collapsing during a training exercise.

Thomas P. McBride, 60, was participating in search and rescue training at around 9 p.m. Thursday when he complained about having difficulty breathing, according to a line-of-duty death notification from the U.S. Fire Administration. McBride removed his SCBA and refused medical treatment, cooling down before saying that he felt better.

McBride then requested that he return to training, but he was instead assigned to pump operations. A short time after that, he collapsed. Resuscitation efforts were started immediately and he was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injury.

The nature and cause of his death is yet to be determined, according to the USFA.

WAVE is reporting that McBride spent 42 years in the fire service and was with the Campbellsburg Volunteer Fire Department for 10 years, though the USFA says he was with the department for 14 years. WAVE also says he is survived by a son, daughter, parents and a grandson.
