Aug. 29-- A Charleston Fire Department ambulance was hit by gunfire early Tuesday morning during a medical response call.

WSAZ reports that a 911 call came in around 2:50 a.m. for a man experiencing leg pain near Central Avenue and Vine Street.

Police told WSAZ that shots rang out after the ambulance arrived and that the man who was in pain ran and took cover. The ambulance also left the scene, but police couldn't say whether the emergency response vehicle was the target of the attack.

Charleston police, who said a bullet also struck a nearby dentist's office, recovered shell casings at the scene consistent with an assault style rifle and say at least 10 rounds were fired during the incident. According to police, a dark SUV and a tan Nissan Pathfinder fled the scene.

No one was injured in the incident.
