IN Firefighter Dies During Training

Fort Wayne Capt. Eric Balliet was leading firefighters through a training exercise when he was stricken.

Fort Wayne fire officials say that a captain died during a training session Wednesday night.

Capt. Eric Balliet, 41, "passed away yesterday while leading his crew from Truck 15 in a training exercise," according to a statement from the fire department

"Captain Balliet was an excellent father, husband, son, and firefighter," the statement read. "Captain Balliet will be missed by his brothers and sisters of the Fort Wayne Fire Department, and we will honor his memory by serving his community with the bravery and dedication that he exemplified."

Balliet, a 19-year veteran of the Fort Wayne Fire Department, was promoted to captain in 2008.

The cause of his death has not been released. 

In 2014, Balliet received a meritorious award for his life-saving actions at a motor vehicle accident while he was off-duty.
