Officials say the neighborhood was filled with migrant workers who sought out cheap housing.

A fire in a two-story housing block in Beijing has left 19 dead and eight injured.

Firefighters worked for three hours to control the fire in the Daxing district, an area surrounded by several clothing factories.

According to the New York Times, the neighborhood is home to migrant workers who seek cheap housing.

The Daxing District Fire Department called the neighborhood a "major disaster zone" in a July report, citing fire and life safety hazards, according to the New York Times.

Fire officials said many of those who were killed or injured were initially trapped in the smoke-filled building.

Police tell BBC that they have detained suspect, but wouldn't elaborate on the cause of the fire.
