Veteran NJ Firefighter Dies from Cardiac Event

Dec. 26, 2017
Haddonfield firefighter Craig Maull, 71, was found dead Thursday of an apparent heart attack.

A New Jersey volunteer firefighter with 50 years in fire service was found dead of an apparent heart attack after leaving a shift because he wasn't feeling well.

The U.S. Fire Administration on Tuesday announced the line-of-duty death of Craig A. Maull, a veteran member of Haddon Fire Company #1 who was found dead at his home last Thursday.

According to the USFA, the 71-year-old Maull was part of a crew responding to a dwelling fire on Dec. 19, but his apparatus was recalled while en route to the fire. Upon returning to quarters, Maull said he wasn't feeling well but declined medical assistance and went home.

Maull missed several additional calls later, which colleagues say was uncommon for him, and members were unable to contact him by phone or email. Family and department members then went to his home Thursday to check on him and found him dead from an apparent heart attack.

Additional police follow-up showed extensive evidence that Maull passed away sometime between the evening of Dec. 19 and morning of Dec. 20.

According to his obituary in the Courier Post, the longtime Haddonfield resident was with Haddon Fire Company #1 since 1967 and was also a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Maull leaves behind his wife, Suzanne, two sons, Kevin and Keith, and four grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for Friday at Kain-Murphy Funeral Services in Haddonfield with a private interment shortly thereafter.
