A Syracuse district fire chief was injured in a crash Monday on his way to a fire call in a city-owned vehicle.

Jan. 15--SYRACUSE, NY-- The Syracuse district fire chief injured in a multi-vehicle crash Monday afternoon was on the way to a fire call when a van collided with his city-owned vehicle, police said.

Police have not yet released the district chief's name, but they have identified two other drivers involved in the crash at North Geddes Street and West Belden Avenue.

The district fire chief had the lights and siren on as his vehicle traveled south on North Geddes Street shortly after 1 p.m., city police Sgt. David Sackett said. As he entered the intersection of West Belden Avenue, a Dodge van, driven by 64-year-old Steven Dickson, of LaFayette, collided with the fire vehicle.

Dickson's van, which had been traveling east on West Belden Avenue, then collided with a tractor-trailer, driven by Charles Greiner, 59, of Minoa, police said.

The tractor-trailer was stopped, facing north on North Geddes Street, Sackett said. The truck driver was not injured, he said.

American Medical Response (AMR) ambulances took Dickson and the district fire chief to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. They both suffered minor injuries in the crash, Sackett said.

The district fire chief was responding to a fire call at 336 Fitch St. when the crash happened.

The fire vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe and the Dodge van were towed from the scene.

Police said they are waiting to hear back from the fire department before releasing the district chief's name.

"The investigation is continuing," Sackett said.
