FL Firefighters Battle 'Tenacious Tire Store Blaze'

March 16, 2019
It took an hour for dozens of Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood and Miramar firefighters to extinguish the fire Friday night.

It took more than three dozen firefighters from four departments to put out “a tenacious tire store blaze” in West Park on Friday evening, authorities said.

The fire erupted just after closing time at 7 p.m. at Discount Tires, 4397 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd., and quickly billowed gigantic plumes of black smoke, according to a fire official.

Westbound lanes of the boulevard, from Southwest 42nd Avenue to 46th Avenue, are closed and will remain so for several hours.

About 30 firefighters from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue were joined by about a dozen more from Hallandale Beach, Hollywood and Miramar to extinguish the fire. It took about an hour, said Battalion Chief Michael Kane, the spokesman.

No one was hurt in the fire, he said.

When firefighters got to the scene “they were met with intense, acrid smoke forcefully pushing from the front of the structure which could be seen and smelled throughout the entire neighborhood,” Kane said.

Tires are particularly combustible, he said. “Due to their composition of rubber and oils tire fires are extremely difficult to extinguish.”

The cause of the fire is not known and is under investigation by the Florida State Fire Marshal.
