"The training kicked in, and that’s what helped in this case," Saginaw's fire chief said about how the crews handled the incident early Thursday.

SAGINAW, MI—A firefighter was injured while helping to put out a blaze on the city’s East Side early Thursday morning.

Firefighters from the Saginaw Fire Department were dispatched about 12:40 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15 to 1021 E. Holland for a fire.

According to Battalion Chief Thomas Raines, while battling the blaze, a female firefighter suffered burns and was transported to the hospital. She has since been released.

Saginaw Fire Chief Christopher Van Loo said that it was unfortunate that someone was hurt while fighting the fire, but credited the department’s training in this incident.

“You hope they never happen,” Van Loo said. “In this case, we are fortunate. The training kicked in, and that’s what helped in this case.”

Occupants of the home were not home during the fire and the fire does not look to be suspicious at this time, Raines said. However, the fire remains under investigation.

The home sustained extensive damage.
