Watch Houston Crews Battle Massive House Fire

Oct. 1, 2019
One Houston firefighter was injured and two people were able to escape the home, which was fully engulfed in flames Monday night.

A firefighter was injured in a massive blaze that tore through an East End home Monday night.

Firefighters began receiving numerous calls about the fire at the 5200 block of Lawndale Street shortly before 10:30 p.m. Monday, according to officials with the Houston Fire Department. When the firefighters arrived, they saw heavy smoke shooting through the roof of the home that was fully engulfed in fire, Sr. Captain Cain Gamez said.

Before firefighters were able to tackle the fire in about 20 minutes, they had some obstacles gaining access to the home, including bypassing a train that stopped on the tracks near the home, Gamez said.

Firefighters used an alternate route, but also had some trouble accessing the roof, he said.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury to his leg, and the two people inside the home were able to exit without injury, he said.

Arson investigators are on scene to determine a cause, he said.

No other information is known.
