CT Firefighters Put Out Large Auto Warehouse Blaze

Oct. 7, 2019
Flames engulfed the Plainfield warehouse as crews from multiple departments responded to the blaze, which was caused when a vehicle inside caught fire.

A fire tore through an auto storage warehouse in Plainfield on Sunday, destroying it, a fire official said.

No one was injured in the fire, which was reported at 4:07 p.m. as a car fire at 731-735 Norwich Road. Two minutes later, firefighters learned the burning vehicle was parked indoors and that the building also was on fire, Fire Chief Travis Irons said.

When firefighters arrived, the one-story, 50 by 80-foot building was engulfed in flames, he said.

A smaller one-story commercial structure also caught fire, Irons said.

With help from neighboring companies, firefighters were able to knock down the fire by 6 p.m., and it was declared under control by about 6:30 p.m.

Firefighters, who included some from the Moosup and Central Village sections of Plainfield and from Ledyard, cleared the scene by 10:20 p.m.

The Plainfield fire marshal is investigating the cause.
