An Oklahoma firefighter was wounded in the face when ammunition went off in a burning house early Sunday.

Buffalo Valley crews were responding to a blaze at a home that was "full of guns and ammo," according to Latimer Emergency Management. Heat from the fire then apparently set off some of the ammunition.

"The ammo started popping off and shot one fireman in the face and head area," Latimer Emergency Management said in an online update.

The injured firefighter was airlifted to a hospital in Tulsa. On Sunday afternoon, Latimer Emergency said there were "no updates that the families wish for me to post at this time."

The department's fire chief also encountered health issues during the incident.

"Our fire chief was so upset he started having chest pain," Latimer Emergency said. "He too was life flighted to tulsa, he will have new meds and a few days at the hospital."
