Debris Hurts PA Firefighter Battling 2-Alarm Blaze

Oct. 17, 2019
Palmer firefighters stopped flames from spreading to a nearby store after a malfunctioning neon sign sparked a fire on the roof of a Chinese restaurant Thursday.

A fire broke out on the roof of Imperial Chinese Restaurant in Palmer Township early Thursday morning, which officials say originated from an electrical failure in the restaurant’s neon sign.

Firefighters dispatched to the shopping center off William Penn Highway and South Greenwood Avenue just after 4 a.m. to find flames jutting out the store front roof and approaching neighboring store roofs, aided by strong overnight winds, Deputy Chief Jim Alercia said.

They contained the fire just before it reached the next-door Cricket store, Alercia said.

One firefighter had a minor injury from falling debris, he said. He was treated at the scene.

Officials ruled the fire accidental, due to electrical failure.
