Downed Power Lines Shock MA Firefighter During Call

Oct. 17, 2019
The Haverhill fire lieutenant was injured by the live wires Thursday while responding to a residential electrical fire that was started, in part, because of severe wind.

A Massachusetts firefighter responding to an electrical fire sparked by downed power wires was shocked by those lines early Thursday.

Severe weather overnight in Haverhill set off the domino effect as heavy wind gusts late Wednesday knocked down a large tree branch in a residential front yard that, in turn, pulled down several power lines, WBZ-TV reports. Those electrical wires then ignited a house fire that sent Haverhill firefighters to the address Thursday morning.

The still-live lines jolted a fire lieutenant at the scene, and he was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for several hours and then released.

"He got shocked pretty good. He got knocked to the ground," Deputy Chief Douglas Brown told WBZ.
