Two New Jersey firefighters were injured when a historic mansion partially collapsed as they worked to put out three-alarm blaze late Thursday.

Crews responded to the fire just before 8 p.m. at a three-story structure in the 100 block of Clinton Avenue of Newark, according to an online update by the city's public safety department. Flames had ignited the top floor of the Kastner Mansion—which was built around 1890 but currently vacant—before eventually gutting the building.

A group of firefighters was briefly trapped when the first-story ceiling gave way, partially collapsing the building. They were able to free themselves, but one firefighter injured a knee and another suffered an eye injury, authorities said.

Newark firefighters were joined by members of the Bloomfield and Elizabeth fire departments, and it took crews about four hours before the blaze was under control. The city's arson unit is currently investigating the incident.
