Terrified residents leapt from the windows of their Las Vegas apartment building early Saturday in a bid to flee a morning fire that has left at least six people dead and more than a dozen injured.
Rescue crews responded to the 2-alarm fire at Alpine Motel Apartments in downtown Las Vegas around 4:15 a.m. When first responders arrived on the scene, smoke was pouring out of the three-story residence and “multiple people were hanging from windows on the second floor,” Las Vegas Fire and Rescue said in a tweet.
“Some have jumped,” officials added.
Responding firefighters were quick to battle back the flames and they were put out entirely within an hour of their arrival.
Six people were killed in the fire and another 13 were injured – five of them critically, KTNV reported.
At least 30 people have been displaced as a result of the blaze, which ravaged the apartment complex just days before Christmas. The Utah/Nevada Red Cross said it was helping those impacted early Saturday afternoon at the nearby Performing Arts School on South Street.
It’s unclear what sparked the fire and crews continued to search for any hot spots still in the building. The incident, dubbed the deadliest apartment fires in Las Vegas history, is currently under investigation.
