Two people were treated for smoke inhalation Tuesday evening after a small fire swept through an upper floor of an apartment building at Armour Road and Broadway Boulevard, according to Kansas City fire officials
The fire was reported just before 7 p.m. at the Westport Central Apartments, 301 W. Armour Road.
Smoke and fire was visible from the ninth floor when fire crews arrived. Additional crews were summoned because of the structure’s height, said Deputy Fire Chief James Walker.
Crews quickly brought the fire under control using two hoses. Firefighters located the two victims and pulled them to safety, Walker said. A dog was also rescued from the building.
“The building has a fire alarm system, but our crews made an aggressive attack,” he said. “We got in and we attacked and extinguished the fire quickly and got it under control.”
The fire was contained to one apartment, but smoke reached the ninth and 10th floors.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates were available, but several residents were displaced due to the heavy smoke, Walker said.
