May 11, 2021
A lack of hydrants created a challenge for firefighters from Montgomery and Frederick counties battling a fire that burned down three connected barns in Dickerson.

A massive fire gutted three connected barns in Maryland, causing more than $2 million in damage late Monday.

Over 65 firefighters in Montgomery and Frederick counties responded at about 11:45 p.m. to the fire in Dickerson, WRC-TV reports. Video footage from the scene captured by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue showed flames engulfing the barn, and two other structures also were destroyed in the fire. The barns contained hay bales and tools and other equipment, according to the department.

Water to put out the fire was a challenge for crews as the barn wasn't near any hydrants. Firefighters were able to control the flames by around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday and were still at the scene extinguishing hot spots until at least 6 a.m.

No animals or people were injured or killed in the fire, and the cause is under investigation. The barn was considered a total loss and damage estimates range from $1.5 million to $2 million.
